Boiling Pots and Busy Hearts: Finding God in the Chaos

Sometimes my life feels like one long episode of “Kitchen Chaos: Home Edition.” I’m racing around, trying to chop, stir, and season all at once, while the smoke alarm auditions for the lead role. The meal eventually gets done, but it’s not pretty. And when my days are like that, my time with God usually ends up overcooked, underseasoned, or missing from the plate altogether.

It’s not intentional. I just start prioritizing other tasks and projects and immerse myself in them until, before I know it, I’ve quietly pushed God to the edges of my day.

Sure, I still manage to throw up a quick prayer and skim a verse or two—usually while stirring a pot or digging for my keys. But my days end up feeling half-baked and incomplete, like that recipe I meant to follow but never quite did.

Does this sound familiar?

So how do we find our way back to God in the chaos? What decisions can we make to step off the crazytown treadmill—where we’re sprinting, sweating, and yet somehow staying in the same spot?

To find peace and return to a God-centered life, we need a strategy—not just good intentions.

Here are a few things that help me:

  • When I sit down with my cup of coffee in the morning, instead of scrolling through social media or hunting for that mythical unicorn deal on Amazon, I open my Bible app.

  • I pray for my husband, kids, grandkids, and others who have asked for prayer.

  • I write down my thoughts, search for Scripture to back them up, and sometimes share them so others can be encouraged, too.

This works for me. It may look different for you. Maybe you journal. Maybe you share your thoughts with your children or close friends. Some might listen to a sermon or a Bible podcast instead of a Spotify playlist on the way to work. (Don’t worry, worship music still counts even if you’re stuck in traffic!)

Whatever helps pull you away from that “messy kitchen” life—with pots boiling over, timers beeping, and burnt leftover pizza in the oven—do it.

Because in the middle of the chaos, God is still inviting us to slow down, look up, and come back to Him.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33
